IFoA × Marsh Protection Gap Challenge
A parametric income protection product for gig workers. This is the kind of problem I gravitate toward: real people, broken systems, and a constraint that forces creative structural thinking.
15 million gig workers across Swiggy, Zomato, Blinkit, and Zepto have no income protection. When extreme weather shuts down delivery operations, they lose everything for that day. Traditional insurers won't touch them — the risk profiles don't fit existing models, and the economics collapse at low income levels.
I designed a parametric, dual-trigger model. Payout activates when two things happen simultaneously: a verified climate event and a measurable drop in platform order volume. No individual claims. No paperwork. The product works at scale because it removes the bottleneck that kills traditional micro-insurance.
Workers can't afford premiums. That's the whole point. So the funding mechanism had to come from somewhere else. I found it in Section 114 of the Code on Social Security 2020 — a regulation that mandates platform companies to contribute to worker welfare. The product sits inside that framework. Legally compliant. Economically sustainable. No worker pays a rupee.
Delivered the full strategy for the IFoA × Marsh international competition. Viable blueprint for scaling parametric insurance to India's gig workforce.
The hardest part of insurance design isn't the actuarial math. It's finding a funding mechanism that doesn't require the most vulnerable people to pay for their own protection. The regulatory pathway was the breakthrough — not the product.
